Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients May Be Spared Heart Attacks & Strokes By Following a Gluten-free Vegan Diet, New Study Suggests

The bad news: People with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke than healthy folks. The good: A new study has shown that a gluten-free vegan diet can help reduce or counter many of the health eroding ills that are associated with rheumatoid arthritis, i.e., lowers cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and oxidized LDL (OxLDL), as well as bolsters the level of natural antibodies against cell and tissue damaging compounds (such as phosphorylcholine).

The study in question was spearheaded by Dr. Johan Frostegard of the Rheumatology Unit at the KarolinskaUniversityHospital in Stockholm and his colleagues. Sixty-six RA patients were randomly into two groups, with 38 of the participants then randomly assigned to eat a gluten-free vegan diet, and the other 28 a well-balanced though non-vegan diet for one year. The researchers analyzed the levels of various fatty, lipid molecules in blood samples at regular intervals, and also measured oxLDL and anti-phosphorylcholine (antiPC) factor at the beginning of the experiment, at 3 months and again at 12 months.

What the researchers found was that the gluten-free vegan diet not only lowered LDL and oxLDL levels and raised antiPC antibodies but lowered the body-mass index (What is BMI? In contrast, none of the tested indicators differed significantly for the control groups on the conventional healthy diet.

AntiPC antibodies are may protect against cardiovascular disease according to Dr. Frostegard.
