Folate may protect you against hemorrhagic strokes

The B-vitamin folate may protect patients from having a hemorrhagic stroke, according to a study in the journal Stroke36:1426, 2005.

Folate, of course, confers cardiovascular benefits due to its role in helping keep artery-damaging homocysteine within a healthy range. The study in Stroke indicates that high folate levels are linked to a low risk of having a hemorrhagic stroke, i.e., a hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts inside the brain.

Scientists looked at dietary and serum levels of folate in sixty-two (62) people who had had hemorrhagic strokes. This group of participants was drawn from the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Cohort. The researchers found that folks who had the highest levels of folate in their bloodstream had the lowest risk of developing a hemorrhagic stroke.

There are many folic acid or folate-containing products available here in the
USA. However, as this vitamin is water-soluble, taking a lot all at once means that most of it likely will wind up spilling into one’s urine and being sent down the drain (A waste of money and a loss of protection). The answer? Buy a slow or time-released folate or folate-containing vitamin formula such as NUTRACENE
